These monuments, Arendt believed, ‘bear testimony to the then still existing need for glorification, for finding a “who”, an identifiable somebody whom four years of mass slaughter should have revealed’ (HC, 181). This book began by noting the important revelatory dimension to political action in Arendt’s thought. Through acting Who Is Revealed in War? 35 and speaking in public men and women can reveal something about themselves that even they would not otherwise have known. This ‘who’, someone’s ‘qualities, gifts, talents, and shortcomings’, is contained in everything they say and do (HC, 179).
Some of this activity was inspired, in part, by the writings of both Franz Fanon and Arendt (Young-Bruehl 1982: 404). The assertion of a Eurocentric double standard derives from Arendt’s assessment of Fanon’s influential book The Wretched Violence and Power, Politics and War 21 of the Earth (1963) and the preface to this volume by Jean-Paul Sartre. This is Arendt’s most direct engagement with Fanon and she does indeed criticize him. But this was not a wholesale attack and had little to do with anticolonialism as such.
This denigration ‘is implied’, she noted, ‘when [he] classifies all occupations which rest essentially on performance—such as the military profession, “churchmen, lawyers, physicians, and opera-singers”— together with “menial services”, the lowest and most unproductive “labour” ’ (HC, 207, emphasis added). These are the very professions, ‘healing, fluteplaying, play-acting’, to which the ancient Greeks pointed to as ‘the highest and greatest activities of men’. But if we turn to the passage from The Wealth of Nations cited by Arendt, we find that he makes no mention of the military (Smith 1982: 431).
