As for rationalism, in one way understood, Oakeshott is in part against it. What he has in mind is a kind of reasoning about means and ends exemplified in engineering and a good deal else. Such reasoning involves the specification of an end and the devising of a specific means to achieve it. Such rationalism is tolerable in some endeavours, but reliance on it, or exclusive reliance on it, is not tolerable in politics.
