Greater than fifty years in the past, Joseph Schumpeter said that strategies intrinsic to a capitalist society produce a "creative destruction," wherein techniques wreck out of date applied sciences, in simple terms to be assaulted in flip by way of more recent and extra effective competitors. This publication asks even if the present chaotic nation of the telecommunications and comparable web industries is proof of artistic destruction, or just as a result of the organisations, governments, and others losing invaluable assets with constrained merits to society as a complete. In telecommunications, for instance, instant, IP, and cable-based applied sciences are all struggling with for a proportion of the marketplace at the moment ruled via older, circuit-switched, copper-terminated networks. This approach is followed by way of mergers, acquisitions, bankruptcies, and funding and divestment in around the globe markets. The choices speak about the first problem dealing with companies, governments, and different gamers: tips on how to take advantage of the possibilities created by means of such harmful dynamics. They spotlight the significance of nationwide rules selling festival and nonmonopolistic industry buildings, as good because the position of recent applied sciences akin to the web in riding down the cost and rushing the diffusion of cutting edge services and products in telecommunications, media, digital retailing, and different "new economic system" industries.

Part 2, “Theory and Practice of Creative Destruction,” reviews the applicability of the framework to the analysis of telecommunications and Internet-based businesses. Part 3, “The Global Context for Creative Destruction,” explores the institutional context within which creative destruction is achieved by presenting case studies in Latin America Europe, and Asia. Part 4 of the book, “Business Destruction Strategies in the Global Internet Economy,’’ presents alternative strategies for redefining firms and markets coping with the process of creative destruction.
McGarty analyzes an Internet telephony pricing model based on the actual practice of a firm operating in the Page 14 New York local access and long-distance business market. The model illustrates the substantial cost advantage and likely pricing strategies of IP versus circuit switching telecommunications service providers. The analysis has implications for regulators overseeing such competitive dynamics, and for firms seeking to generate revenues from telecommunications services. CREATIVE BUSINESS SURVIVAL STRATEGIES The first four parts of the book describe many of the destructive tendencies engendered by the Schumpeterian process.
McGarty implicitly argues for the value created by the diffusion of the Internet. The creative destruction that leads to the emergence of new networks, with its associated economics, Page 17 allows for an increase in openness of networks and markets and a dramatic lowering of barriers to entry. Implicitly, Lehr supports the creative destruction theory. He considers that the multiple moves along the value chain that result in acquisitions and alliances represent rational moves by firms seeking to reduce cost, promote innovation, and extend market power.
